European military independence refers to the idea that Europe, particularly the European Union (EU), should develop its own defense capabilities independent of external powers, particularly the United States and NATO.

This includes developing nuclear armaments between France and the UK, conventional physical military power, cyber security, etc. The idea has been proposed by nationalists since the 1950s, but has recently resurfaced with vigor, particularly from Friedrich Merz, the man set to be German's next chancellor.

The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) is widely considered a central authority on defining mental health diagnoses. Prior to 2022, the DSM had no inclusion of specific diagnosis criteria regarding Prolonged Grief Disorder (PGD). In 2022, specific diagnostic criteria for PGD were added, which consist of frequent symptoms of loss causing disruption to day-to-day activity, including intense yearning for the deceased or preoccupation with loss 12+ months after a traumatic event.

Since the addition of these criteria to the DSM, physicians have begun diagnosing PGD, with some studies showing diagnostic rates as high as 40% among patients who have suffered traumatic loss.
